Get Healthy Monmouth: Go Vegan Without Going Crazy
featuring Guest Speaker Lisa McComsey, author of Vegan Cheat Sheet
Sunday, September 24, 2017 12:30-2:30 pm
(potluck service begins at 12:45 pm, talk begins at 1:00 pm)
Event Info:
An unlikely—if not reluctant—vegan, The Vegan Cheat Sheet co-author Lisa McComsey shares her improbable journey to veganism (greed was involved) and her shocking realization that it was nothing she expected it to be: i.e., a difficult, boring, deprivation diet that would sap her energy and rob her of nutrients. Learn how she made the transition (cold turkey), ran five plant-powered marathons, and has come to love the vegan life. She’ll spill her top tips for getting started, quash common myths (like vegans are protein deficient), and share her favorite foods, shortcuts, and vegan replacements for things you love.
Book Signing to follow the talk. Books will be available for sale.
Location:
Samuel Hayes Magill Commons Club Dining Room
Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ

Plants for Peace Rules for Vegan Share-A-Dish Meals:
All dishes must be completely vegan. They may not contain any meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, or honey. Gelatin is a meat by-product. Please watch out for hidden dairy products, such as whey and casein or caseinate. Please prepare a 4×6 card with the name of the dish and all ingredients. Prepare enough to serve a sufficient sample for at least 8 people (basically, bring enough for a complete meal for two people if that's all they ate, not that they would). Please bring your own serving dishes and utensils, as well as your own dishes to eat from; this will help us reduce waste created from single use plastics. The vegan potluck will begin being served at 12:45 pm. Please arrive early to help set up, if you can.
Presenter Bio:
An award-winning copywriter, Lisa has worked on staff and as a freelance copywriter for publications like Vogue, People, Life, Real Simple, Vanity Fair, Bon Appétit, GQ, House & Garden, Brides, The New York Times, Every Day with Rachael Ray, and Dr. Oz The Good Life. She spent three years as copy director of Allure magazine and is a two-time recipient of the Time Inc. President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Lisa cultivated a love for rice and beans while living in Costa Rica and Baja, Mexico during a three-year volunteer stint as an English teacher—giving her a taste of what was to come when she decided to go vegan in 2009. Following her “conversion,” she and longtime friend Amy Cramer co-authored The Vegan Cheat Sheet, published by Penguin Books in 2013.
An avid bicyclist and runner, Lisa has completed twenty-five marathons, several century rides, and a handful of triathlons. After growing up at the Jersey Shore and vowing “never to go back” once she graduated high school, Lisa attended Bucknell University and then moved to New York City and Latin America—before, yes, returning to her New Jersey roots. She now happily resides near the water, where she continues to write and work as a marketing consultant.
