Event Description

Join us for our animal ethics book club!

Why do we choose to care for animals? What is it that drives us to extend compassion to the non-human? Our monthly Animal and Environmental Ethics Book Club will explore these, and similar, topics as we read some of the best historical, as well as some of the most innovative, books on the subject.

For this meeting, we will be reading the second half (Part 2 and 3) of The Sexual Politics of Meat, which is described as a "controversial exploration of the interplay between contemporary society's ingrained cultural misogyny and its obsession with meat and masculinity" (from the book description). As we've discovered in reading Part 1, a majority of the text is focused on language, and the way language influences how we think about animals.

We will meet at the comfortable tea and coffee room on the upper level of Crazy Wisdom in downtown Ann Arbor. During our meeting we'll discuss the text, it's various insights, and what it might mean for us and our veg* ethic and for animal rights in general. We'll discuss what we agree with, disagree with, and what makes us think and ponder.

In addition to the Amazon link above, here is the Google Books link (including preview).

If you can only make it through part of the chapters, you're welcome to still attend, but we highly encourage you to try!
